We have been recycling in our house for over 20 years. It is just a habit – plastic, papers, and glass as much as possible. We cut apart the plastic rings that are around six-packs of soft drinks. We are doing what we can to preserve the environment in our own small way.
In procurement, strong leaders are focused on sustainability. For some teams, this has been adopted and become normal behavior, similar to our household. It has become routine.
For others, that is not the situation. I found this organization, Sustainable Procurement Institute. They are based in Toronto, Canada and founded in 2011. They help you develop and implement sustainability into your processes. It includes information on how to determine sustainability in the supply base that you do business with. It is an online training program and quite comprehesive.
The training includes lessons learned such typical challenges and how to overcome them, reporting and tracking, and which goods and services lend themselves to sustainability. If you are already up and running, there are courses for improving that performance.
This week’s esourcing Wiki-Wednesday is Sourcing Sensei Scruple Seven: Sustainability. It reviews the importance of the procurement organization to adopt the processes and award to suppliers that practice sustainable habits and use ingredients that do not harm the environment.
