In Massachusetts there is a small supermarket chain known as Market Basket. They are currently in a dispute over the leadership. The employees are so loyal to the ex-CEO (Arthur T) that they have walked off the job at the warehouse, at the office and at the stores. The customers are also boycotting the stores. Without deliveries, the shelves are empty. This has been going on for several weeks. It is amazing that employees are giving up their livelihood and their paychecks for this executive. Clearly he is adored by the associates.
This week’s blog pick is “4 leadership tips that will make people adore you”. I would imagine that Arthur T must have demonstrated many of these traits or the Market Basket employees would not have basically closed down the company operations.
The four areas discussed are:
- How do you treat your people?
- Do the people who work for you understand how what they do contributes to the success of the organization?
- Do you express appreciation to each person on your team for a job well done at least once a week?
- Are you getting the results you want?
The third trait is appreciation and thanking associates for their efforts. Years ago I was working on a project and we were putting in long hours and had a tight deadline. There was very high visibility as well. One evening, we left quickly to go get snacks from the vending machine. When we came back, there was a hand written ‘thank you’ note on our conference room table from the senior executive in our organization. We were all so surprised and it felt great to get that recognition. We made copies of the note and everyone kept it. I still have mine and it was over 20 years ago.
This is just an example of how much a ‘thank you’ can mean to your associates. It certainly is a simple enough gesture but so many of us are on to the next project and take it for granted. It does not cost anything but can certainly reap big rewards.
