Achieving World-Class Procurement Part 2: Taking a Deep Look at Your Current Operations

Achieving World-Class Procurement Part 2: Taking a Deep Look at Your Current Operations

As I mentioned in Achieving World-Class Procurement Part 1, today’s increasingly competitive market landscape is driving organizations to reinvest in their procurement and strategic sourcing departments like never before. Beyond establishing centralized purchasing operations, best-in-class companies are elevating their procurement organizations by taking a deeper look at people, processes, technology, and metrics and optimizing them in ways that support enterprise-wide goals – through procurement transformation.  Transformation initiatives allow companies to gain more value from their procurement operations, moving from a reactionary model focused on reducing costs to a more proactive approach to managing spend that streamlines purchasing practices and enhances supplier relationships.

Achieving World-Class Procurement: The Steps Leading Companies are Taking to Optimize their Procurement Teams

Achieving World-Class Procurement: The Steps Leading Companies are Taking to Optimize their Procurement Teams

In today’s competitive market landscape, simply having a centralized procurement organization is only the first step to better managed supplier relationships and spend. Leading organizations are quickly realizing that procurement and sourcing groups can offer far more value than tactical support. World-class procurement groups aren’t focused on processing POs and fulfilling orders. Rather, they’re focused on supporting each business unit at a strategic level.

Book Review: Building Digital Culture

Book Review: Building Digital Culture

This should be a very sobering thought for anyone in business. The company that you toil and work so hard to make succeed is statistically unlikely to exist in a decade.” (p. 5)

Building Digital Culture: A Practical Guide to Successful Digital Transformation by Daniel Rowles (@DanielRowles) and Thomas Brown (@ThinkStuff) (Kogan Page, 2017) is the reason I review books. While I was reading this book, I was interrupting everyone I know to share ideas and quotes. If you are looking for an engaging, readable text that moves at the same speed as the digital world it describes, buy this book.

Book Review: Radical Business Model Transformation

Book Review: Radical Business Model Transformation

“Companies that dominated the national market for decades are suddenly confronted with new competitors that are redefining entire industries and hence restricting the incumbents’ strategic freedom to shape their future.” (p. 6)

Radical Business Model Transformation: Gaining the competitive edge in a disruptive world by Carsten Linz, Günter Müller-Stewens, and Alexander Zimmermann (Kogan Page, 2017) presents readers with the same challenge question the authors asked each other during the writing process: ‘Are we being radical enough?’

Are You Ready for The Revolution?

Are You Ready for The Revolution?

It seems like only a few weeks ago that Phil Ideson (Art of Procurement) and I first resolved to lead a global, virtual, multimedia, interactive event designed to help professionals the world over make a change - but we’ve actually been hard at work since late winter. As we work our way through the last two weeks before The Procurement Revolution becomes a reality, the time has come for everyone else to start getting ready too.

Best Procurement and Supply Chain Webinars 9/5 - 9

Best Procurement and Supply Chain Webinars 9/5 - 9

If you take a look at the Buyers Meeting Point events calendar for this week, there is nothing going on. None of our usual hosts or organizers have anything planned. While that makes sense given the Labor Day holiday in the US and Canada, not having any events to look forward to would be too much to bear! So we looked to our friends at Webinara to see what they might have listed and found some great webinars to recommend! Click on the title of each event below to view the full description and register on Webinara.com or click here to visit the BMP events calendar to see what’s on tap for the rest of the month.

NextGen Enterprise IT Solutions – A Panel Discussion

September 7th, 11am ET

Procurement has more than enough experience with different IT trends and models – Cloud, SaaS, hybrid, mobile – to recognize that managing the needs of everyone in the enterprise and leveraging the advantages of all models requires a great deal of planning and strategy. In this panel format webinar, leaders from Cygnet Infotech and some of their industry colleagues will discuss opportunities such as IoT, Data Science, Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality enablement for Hybrid Ecosystems with extremely enriched customer experience

Case Study: The Supply Chain in Action

September 8th, 12n ET

Sometimes the best events are the ones you never expected to find – including this webinar from APICS and Prayon Group about how the Georgia-based operation of a global phosphate producer went from being “dead and buried” to becoming a successful 38 year old startup – all thanks to practical applications of supply chain principles. For all of the discussion of transformations, we rarely hear about one, let alone one as wildly successful or with as much at stake as at Prayon. In this webinar, Melissa Wright, Prayon Group’s VP of Supply Chain, will explain how moving from survival mode to transitioning of MRP and inventory processes & procedures to sustainable performance enabled the company to become recognized as a regional economic force.

Book Review: Procurement 20/20

Book Review: Procurement 20/20

“By 2020, procurement’s role will have become even more important for sustaining constant supply, best cost, reduced volatility, faster and improved innovation, and clean corporate-brand image.” (p. 179)

Procurement 20/20: Supply Entrepreneurship in a Changing World is a team effort by four members of McKinsey’s Global Purchasing and Supply Management Practice: Peter Spiller, Nicolas Reinecke, Drew Ungerman, and Henrique Teixeira. If you were at the Institute for Supply Management’s conference in Las Vegas this May, you might have even picked up a copy for free. (Thanks to Cottrill Research’s Jeanette Jones for grabbing my copy!)

Book Review: The CPO: Transforming Procurement in the Real World

Book Review: The CPO: Transforming Procurement in the Real World

I have read and reviewed a number of business publications, most of them directly related to supply management, but The CPO is truly a unique creation. This book captures the adventure of procurement by outlining principles and concepts for success – not through dry or prescriptive chapters – but through the very engaging story of a fictional CPO and the challenges he faces on the job and at home. Thomas Sutter, the main character (dare I say hero?), captured my attention immediately and held it right through the final pages. I’ll even admit (my apologies to the authors for cheating) that at one point I was so wrapped up in the interpersonal dynamics of the story that I peeked ahead to read the end so that I might relax and absorb the full message of the book as I went.

Webinar Notes: Designing a Procurement Transformation Program for Best-in-Class Performance

This week’s featured webinar was a joint effort between ISM, Zycus, and Ardent Partners. It was presented in advance of a two part research series that will be published later this month. The research was “designed to help procurement organizations develop a transformation "blueprint" — a holistic view of the source-to-settle process and the underlying architecture required to support sustainable business process improvement.” (ISM event description).

Webinar Notes: Two Perspectives on Procurement Transformation

Webinar Notes: Two Perspectives on Procurement Transformation

Each week I attend two or three webinars. Usually, I pick the most interesting event to share in this Friday webinar notes post. This week, there were two events on procurement transformation: one from Procurement Leaders/CombineNet/Kellogg and another from Sourcing Interests Group/Zycus/Capgemini. Both were good events in their own right, but combining what I heard in the two events provides a rich look at one of the hottest trends in procurement today.

Procurement on YouTube: Procurement Transformation at the 2012 Olympics

Procurement on YouTube: Procurement Transformation at the 2012 Olympics

In this week’s procurement YouTube video, we hear a new clip from Matthew Hattersley, Commercial Partner at Clarion, as he talks about Transformational Procurement. Clarion recently hosted a seminar at which Paul Dickinson from the Olympic Delivery Authority and head of procurement for the Olympic Park shared his experiences.

In our August 6th Weekly Procurement Update on the PI Window on Business Blog Talk Radio program we heard from Jan Matthews, the Head of Catering, Cleaning & Waste for the London Organizing Committee as she outlined the requirements for the overall catering services program.

Now that the 2012 London Olympics are done, and were by all accounts an overwhelming success, those involved are getting an opportunity to reflect on what they learned. This includes procurement, and the transformational efforts that were attempted.

According to what Paul Dickinson shared at the seminar, there are two primary reasons why attempts at procurement transformation fail:

  1. The strategy in place must be clear at the executive and end user levels and be connected by clear plans that drive the implementation of the strategy.
  2. Document supplier requirements, including outputs and timetables, and use objective, measurable milestones so all parties involved can track how the effort is progressing.

Click on the video below to view it for yourself (or click here to view it on YouTube if your browser does not support Flash) and then join the conversation here.
