Blog Pick of the Week: Ten Morning Habits that Promote Greater Success

Are you a morning person? I happen to be someone who requires very little sleep so I am a morning, noon and night person. Lucky for my family right? They have benefitted from it since I have more hours to get things done or to plan our next adventure! However, there have been some frustrations as I make too much noise while everyone else is trying to sleep in on a Saturday morning!!

One of the events this week that you might have attended was Gartner's webinar about the search for talented leaders to take sourcing and procurement to the next level. Well that is YOU regardless if you are leading one project, a small team or an entire organization.

So what does all that have to do whether you are a morning person or not?

Blog Pick of the Week: On Food, the Environment and Choices

We went out to dinner last night as a celebration of our daughter's recent promotion. The restaurant was chosen specifically because they feature locally grown items on their menu. We had an interesting conversation about the virtues of that approach for the environment. Then the flip side was discussed about how many jobs are created by having food choices from other parts of the globe.

Blog Pick of the Week: Mergers & Acquisitions Procurement Related Opportunities Shouldn't be overlooked

Every one of us has been impacted by a merger or acquisition. The day after my husband and I closed on our first house, he was told his position was being eliminated due to a merger. My response was at least they waiting until after the closing went through!!

When I was reading this blog about mergers and acquisitions, it brought to light some areas where procurement can step in and show their value.

Blog Pick of the Week: Implementing Supplier Performance Management

Yogi Berra was a famous baseball player for the New York Yankees in the 1940's and '50's. He is famous for his quotes. One that comes to mind is: "If you don't know where you are going, you might wind up somewhere else" . That can certainly apply to procurement and supplier performance. If that is not measured and reviewed, how do you know if they are meeting your organization's goals?

I have been part of an organization that has utilized scorecards to measure the performance of suppliers. Both the stakeholder and the supplier are asked the same questions. We started out slowly and built it up to include more suppliers and categories. It took time and return rate of the survey is still a challenge.

Blog Pick of the Week: The (Supplier) Match Game

We are all guilty of getting comfortable with what we know. It is easier to get complacent with what you know than to stretch to find alternatives. This is true when sourcing the same category multiple times. Looking for additional suppliers and more in depth RFP questions takes WORK - not that!

This blog from Sourcingmfg.com discusses just that topic. How to match buyers and suppliers?

Blog Pick of the week: Innovation has a role in procurement

I attended a conference this week with discussions revolving around suppliers and procurement working together to develop innovative solutions. In this economy, those organizations that can work in this manner will gain loyal costumers.

I don't want you to think this is child's play. It is actually somewhat difficult and relies on trust and building strong relationships. The team we see here is very cooperative and working collaboratively.

Blog Pick of the Week: How to Retain your Top Talent

Are you tired of trying to hire, maintain and retain talented individuals? How do organizations with low turnover rates do it? I decided to look around and see what some companies are doing.

One organization allows their staff to take a sababatical. This program can be a one-time opportunity and may either be paid or unpaid. With so many professionals working a lot of overtime, this may be a wonderful incentive towards retaining your talent.

Blog Pick of the Week: More Frequently Asked Spend Analysis Questions

The old adage is "Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself". This was a quote from Eleanor Roosevelt. How true that is but many of us want to do it ourselves anyway! I know I have had the opportunity to lead several spend analysis initiatives including finding the right provider. We made a selection and it turned out we had not asked all the right questions.
