How do you drink your water?

How do you drink your water?

Several years ago we installed a water filter in our home. We strive to drink water over other beverages and carry reusable water bottles with us to work, the gym and on trips. We will occasionally purchase single use plastic bottles, especially for holidays and large family gatherings.

Over the last few weeks we have been sharing a variety of topics on sustainability. Water is a major factor throughout those discussions.

There has been a great deal of dialog around the waste created from the plastic water bottles. Many organizations are encouraging associates to have reusable water bottles. Others are reinforcing the message of recycling all plastic and preventing it from going into landfills.

More than 60% of the US population drinks bottled water. I was reading this article from International Bottled Water Association . This discusses the perspective from the bottled water industry. The sales continue to grow and it is now an 11B industry in the US. They are very conscious of sustainability initiatives. They are working to reduce the amount of plastic in each bottle and to use recyclable products whenever possible.

In contrast, this perspective from Stonehill Sustainability Blog encourages reducing your carbon footprint by utilizing reusable water bottles. They outline the quality of the water, the lack of regulation and the large amount of resources used by the bottled water industry.

What do you do as a procurement professional to reduce your carbon footprint? Does your company recycle in the workplace? If you are looking for ideas, here is an article from Earth911. Have you implemented any of these ideas? How has participation been?
