As we are sitting here watching the Pairs Skating Competition, it is apparent that a lot of procurement was needed to put the Olympics together. The facilities, the food, the equipment, transportation and so on.
These Winter Games are the most expensive of any other Olympics. The total cost will be over 51 Billion dollars. There were many advances in technology and the facilities which contributed to the total cost.
I saw this article that talked about Procurement at the Sochi Olympics. The Olympic setting enables an environment like no other. For example, international suppliers like Coca-Cola and Visa work together with local and regional suppliers and the Russian Government.
A very clear procurement process was put in place in 2008. That included guidelines for sustainable procurement practices. The past two Olympic games laid the framework for sustainable procurement processes.
Procurement organizations can learn a great deal about sustainable purchasing from the example put in place for the Olympics.
