Habit 3: Put First Things First

Habit 3: Put First Things First

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, first published in 1989, is a self-help book written by Stephen R. Covey. It has sold more than 25 million copies in 38 languages worldwide, and the audio version has sold 1.5 million copies, and remains one of the best selling nonfiction business books.

The approach continues to be pertinent in every day life at work and at home. Buyers Meeting Point will be reviewing each of the Seven Habits over the next few months.

Habit 3: Put First Things First

We all know that there are only so many hours in the day. With that, there are many more demands on our time than we can possibly accomplish. According to Steven Covey,  you have to recognize that not doing everything that comes along is okay. You can do a much better job accomplishing what matters most by focusing on your highest priorities.

When I was in high school, I really wanted a racing bike. I had no money and I had a pitiful summer job. I found the bike I wanted and then every penny went into the bank for the bike. I passed on a lot of other activities since I had a goal of that beautiful green bike. It took a lot of discipline but it got easier as each week went along. I have that bike many years later and it is beautiful even today. It is smooth, sleek and very fast. Obviously I set a priority and then focused on what mattered most to me at that time.

Do you have any examples of how putting first things first has benefited your career, organization or personal life? Did it lower the stress level  for you? Was it difficult to do?
