Since 2008, the total number of patents filed by U.S.-based companies has fallen below 50% of all patents filed in our country.
China has also broken the patent application record, with more than a million domestic submissions, according to the World Intellectual Property Organisation, more than the U.S., Japan and South Korea combined.
Foreign competition, not automation, is behind the loss of around 1.5 million manufacturing jobs between 1995 and 2008. 78,000 manufacturing plants closed between 2000 and 2014, a 22% drop. Robots still have to work somewhere and there simply aren’t that many robots in U.S. factories, compared with other advanced economies. When plants close and are moved overseas, R&D centers almost always go with them.
